As an experienced Osteopath in my 30th year of practice, and General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) registered, I regularly provide osteopathy for the over-60s in Bristol.
In fact, one in every four patients that I treat at my Henleaze clinic is aged 60 or over.
This means I can offer osteopathic treatment to patients in their 60s that gives them full confidence and the reassurance that they are in the hands of a trusted healthcare expert.
According to this recent report from the Centre for Ageing Better, the largest population increase in the UK over the next 40 years will be amongst people aged 65 and over.
That means that many more patients will require effective and safe treatment for common issues and injuries.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated in recent research that between 2015 and 2050, the percentage of the world's population over 60 will nearly double from 12% to 22%.
While some people get worried about age-related issues, I would say that staying mobile is the single most important element when it comes to maintaining holistic health.
When it comes to providing osteopathic treatments to patients aged over 60 across Bristol, to improve mobility, I stress the importance of staying mobile and active within pain-free ranges.
‘Movement is life’, and so, as well as treatment, I offer older patients bespoke exercises to assist them in recovery from issues or injuries that they present with at my osteopathic clinic in Westbury Park.
Common health conditions for the over-60s include joint restriction/strains, stiffness and arthritis, which can all be helped significantly with gentle osteopathic maintenance, manual mobilisation and bespoke exercises.
Osteopathic treatments for the over-60s are a safe and effective form of manual therapy that provides my patients in Bristol with a non-invasive approach to managing a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions.
As the body ages, changes can occur such as muscle weakness/wasting, joint stiffness and postural changes. But that doesn't mean the over-60s need to suffer, and it’s not too late to be proactive with your health.
Working with an experienced osteopath in Bristol can help patients over 60 to stay active and proactive to limit the ageing process.
General aches, niggles and pain can all be addressed during osteopathic consultations, and I specialise in providing patient-based diagnosis and management.
There is so much that can be done in terms of prevention and maintenance of issues for patients over-60 in Bristol, and a number of age-focused health and wellbeing activities are worth considering.
So if high-impact activities are not for you, then consider aqua fit, bowls, walking groups, yoga and pilates. All are fun, social and active.
