How to maintain health and stay positive in Bristol during second Covid-19 lockdown

As we enter testing times, I’ve had a number of patients asking how to maintain good body health and stay positive in Bristol during the second Covid-19 lockdown.

Firstly, it’s important to point out that my Bristol osteopathy clinic is classed as an essential service, and is thus staying open to treat patients throughout the duration of the second Covid-19 lockdown with the usual PPE and sanitisation measures in place.

In terms of ways to maintain health and stay positive, some of my top tips include the following straightforward pieces of advice as a leading Bristol osteopath:

Maintain activity levels in lockdown – back and neck joints need movement to stay healthy, supple, and in optimum health. Daily exercise is permitted in lockdown, so I advise patients to ensure they keep up with their fitness activities such as running, walking, cycling, yoga and pilates.

Focus on posture – keeping the back and neck healthy in lockdown is critical for overall body health, and I recommend patients keep an eye on this. Look at your sitting position. Sit straight and stand tall to maintain good overall posture.

Sit less, stand more – this is one of my favourite body health mottos. Perhaps try standing up to work if you are at home during the second Covid-19 lockdown. Try the breakfast bar or invest in a stand up desk or a desk riser. This could transform your spinal health. If you are sitting, make sure you take micro breaks, move and stretch for 60 seconds every 20 minutes when working at home.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate – the body needs between 2-4 litres of water per day to operate at optimum levels. Dehydration can cause physical and mental dysfunction. Joints, ligaments and muscles need hydration to help protect them against injury. I advise patients to drink water steadily during the day.

Feed your mind and communicate daily – Keeping on top of mental health during lockdown will positively impact physical health, so I recommend that all patients stay mentally active. Try some mindfulness. Keep the brain active and be creative; reading, writing, board games, puzzles, and crosswords will all help to mentally stimulate.

Keep talking - Keeping in regular communication by phone, video call, or over the garden fence with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues at home and abroad. Keep an eye out for those that might be struggling.
